March 2014 - Geoff returns to UK to rally for elephants

Nissan MicraIn February 2009 I made my stage rallying debut as a driver on the Telford Winter Stages. Despite rolling the borrowed Nissan Micra kitcar I still fought back to finish second in class! The result was more than I could ever have expected but the work and effort of those who supported me in the project made me realise and appreciate how hard it is to go rallying!

The 200bhp BuggySince that amazing day I have only driven on one other rally. We were second fastest in class on the opening stage before breaking a drive-shaft and being forced to super rally. I have, however, been fortunate enough to compete at Auto-cross in both a 200bhp buggy and in a rally spec Subaru Impreza N10 with fastest times and podiums every time out.

With Raaji in the Evo9These days I am happy and privileged to be codriving for Raaji Bharij in the Kenyan Championship – he has more talent than me and it's a pleasure reading the notes at those speeds… but there is no denying that sometimes I'd love to get back behind the wheel.

Well in May this year I will get that chance! I'll be headed over to Wales to contest the Plains Rally, an event which uses the very same forest roads that the World Champions use every November on Wales Rally GB! When I lived in the UK this was both my "home" rally and my favourite of the season and I always vowed that I would contest it one day. And I want to use this opportunity to mix business and pleasure by using the front of the car to promote the amazing "Hands off our Elephants" campaign that is helping to raise awareness for the plight of elephants and rhinos at the hands of Kenyas poachers.

Subaru N10This is a campaign I feel strongly about and by using the car as a marketing platform I also hope to find sponsors to help cover some of the expenses that I will incur on the rally… such as the hire of the rally car, tyres, fuel and entry fee! So far between myself and some generous sponsors, such as Geoff Jones Motorsport, Lentorre Lodge and Rob's Magic, I have already raised almost half of the budget required but still need to find a further GBP3000 for the project to become a reality.

Watch this space for further developments as I head off on this "ele"phantastic adventure!
